Regional science events to inspire budding boffins.

Queensland teachers and students in Chinchilla, Ipswich and Toowoomba will have the opportunity to get outside the classroom and experience an immersive STEM program as part of the World Science Festival.

Included in the program are a range of activities for students from Prep to Year 12 including workshops and conversations showcasing the role science plays in our world. Students will explore STEM through self-led hands-on science activities and interacting with real life scientists and fascinating displays.

Each school visit includes a curriculum-linked program, tailored by Year level, featuring an explosive science show with a careers Q&A. There are three remaining regional events.

Feedback from students and teachers who attended World Science Festival Queensland’s 2021 regional program indicated that:

• 75% of students agreed that World Science Festival Queensland increased their understanding of the value of science.

• 70% of students agreed that attending World Science Festival Queensland increased their awareness of science related careers and/or study pathway.

• 65% of students agreed that many of the things they learn in science subjects will help them to get a job after school.

Teachers who brought their class to the festival in 2021 also said they found the education program immensely valuable with 90 per cent agreeing that the festival was an important mechanism for STEM engagement and learning.

“Since 2016 more than 6,500 students from Queensland schools have taken part in the World Science Festival Queensland regional education program, and we hope they continue to be inspired through this new program,” Queensland Museum Network CEO Dr Jim Thompson said.

Educators who are interested in booking their school or class in to experience the 2022 regional education program at World Science Festival Queensland are encouraged to explore the program at the event closest to them, and book early.
