Wakakirri able to offer limited live events in Term 4 and Wakakirri online

Schools in States and Territories around Australia other than Victoria will be able to participate in Wakakirri Online.
Virtual Wakakirri
The show goes online

Unfortunately, due to a combination of factors caused by the Covid-19 outbreak, Wakakirri is only able to offer a live event to Victorian Secondary and Dance schools in 2020. Schools in other States and Territories around Australia will be able to participate in Wakakirri Online but no live events are able to be staged.

The cancellations are due to a combination of factors including ongoing crowd gathering restrictions at live indoor events, a crowded Term 4 schedule for schools and financial responsibility for Wakakirri’s long term future. This decision was taken in the best interests of Wakakirri being able to return in 2021.

The following Wakakirri events will take place in 2020:

  • Victoria Secondary & Dance Schools: A modified live event in Term 4 will be offered to Victorian Secondary schools only. Click here for details on the event. The Victorian Government is a major sponsor of Wakakirri and is directly funding this,

  • Victoria Primary Schools: Live events have been cancelled for 2020. Schools are instead encouraged to enter Wakakirris Online which includes Story-Dance Video and Screen Challenge. Find out more here.

  • ACT, NSW, QLD, SA, WA Schools: Live events for Primary and Secondary schools have been cancelled for 2020. Schools are instead encouraged to enter Wakakirri Online which includes Story-Dance Live and Screen Challenge. Find out more here.

  • 2021: Wakakirri will return in 2021 across Australia.

The Wakakirri Online - Story-Dance Video event has been established for 2020 only. To allow any school that has created a Story-Dance or planning to create a Story-Dance to participate this year. Schools participating in this event will be eligible for awards including the Reconciliation Story Award, State Story Awards and the biggy 'Story of the Year'.

It is with a heavy heart that this decision has been made. We have tried our best to come up with alternative solutions so schools would have a chance to perform but it has proved to be a bridge too far. Rest assured that Wakakirri will definitely be back in 2021, bigger and better than ever! We would like to thank the hundreds of schools who did not cancel their registrations and held on to the last moment. We thank you for your support and hope to see you again soon.
