Obituary
A man that encouraged excellence in others.

Neil MacNeill gave his all to education. Over his long and diverse education journey he always remained true to improving the lives of students in his care. Over the past 25 years, I have been privileged to work with him across many education roles and contexts but most importantly he was my loyal, clever, generous and kind friend.

I co-authored countless articles for education journals and presented at numerous conferences with Neil’s steady mentoring and particular penchant for all things grammar; a “split infinitive” comes to mind.  He was relentless on improving teaching and learning and he was truly inspirational.

In 2007, as a brand-new mum, I completed a PhD on the Pedagogic Beliefs of Primary School Principals.  Every step of the way, Neil would support me, promote me but most importantly “Believe in me.”

This is what set Neil apart from anyone else. He shone brightest when he was helping others to achieve their goals and dreams.  In a world of egocentricity and self-promotion, Neil was none of these. At his heart, he was the epitome of a lifelong learner and those of us lucky enough to call him a friend and mentor could feel the army of protection and presence he provided whenever required.

Neil’s life was colourful and extraordinary, his education achievements may not actually capture just how wonderful he was in a classroom where it mattered.  He always had time for each child and each teacher, and they knew it. Ellenbrook Primary School was Neil’s happy place for over two decades and the students, staff and families he touched will continue to be thankful for generations.

What I wouldn’t give to pick up the phone and hear your voice Neil on the other end, “Hello Mellie my friend.”

Rest easy my loyal, kind friend.
