The Wakakirri Experience: A Journey of Growth and Inspiration
Each year, thousands of students across Australia take to the stage in Wakakirri, the nation’s largest performing arts event for schools. The impact of participation goes far beyond the performance itself - students develop confidence, teamwork, and creativity while forming lasting memories.
Schools continue to share just how powerful the experience is for their students:
Jodi of Birdwood Primary School shares, “The transferable skills that students gain from being a part of this event are immense. We have seen very shy students unsure about being on stage build confidence and self assurance to the point that they have relished the opportunity to perform under lights. Wakakirri definitely fosters teamwork, creativity, student engagement and a strong sense of community.”
Sarah from Toongabbie Christian School says, “It will be something that your students will talk about for years to come. At a K-12 school, I still have Year 12 students talking to me about their primary experience in Wakakirri.”
Meanwhile, long-time participants continue to see its lasting benefits:
Adam Kaslo of Strathfield North Public School highlighted how Wakakirri contributes to student engagement: “Programs like Wakakirri are instrumental in keeping students engaged and excited about school. The high level of student involvement and the enthusiasm generated by Wakakirri contribute to our position as the school with the highest attendance rate in our network, enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes.”
Why Wakakirri?
Founded in 1992, Wakakirri has grown into a prestigious platform for storytelling and artistic expression, engaging over 10,000 students annually and captivating an audience of approximately 30,000. More than just a performance, Wakakirri champions the educational and social benefits of the performing arts, promoting confidence, teamwork, and self-expression.
Recognised Excellence in Arts Education
Wakakirri’s impact has been nationally recognised with the Australian Performing Arts Teachers Association Award for Excellence in Performing Arts Education. This accolade underscores the festival’s dedication to fostering creativity, storytelling, and artistic growth in students across the country.
More Than a Performance - A School Well-being Initiative
Research and case studies affirm that Wakakirri is more than just a stage event - it is an enriching journey that builds confidence, strengthens school communities, and enhances student well-being. By providing a platform for young people to express themselves, develop new skills, and connect with others, Wakakirri instils a lifelong appreciation for the arts while fostering a sense of purpose and creativity.
