Aussie Bush Tales, humorous stories celebrating traditional life in the Australian bush

Author Nicola Pagano and Indigenous story-teller, actor and musician, Phil Walleystack have closely collaborated in recent years to bring us the very popular Aussie Bush Tales; humorous stories celebrating traditional life in the Australian bush.

Animated episodes of the series have been aired regularly on NITV and are also available via SBS On-Demand. They rate very highly with audiences. Viewers follow the adventures of brothers Jarra, Boya and Meeka, their cousin Jedda and dingo puppy Snowy. Elder Moort and his wife, Marlee guide the curious children through many exciting adventures.

The stories are not just available on television and big screen. Now schools can take advantage of a special offer of books and activities to share and enjoy in our classrooms.

Work packages support Literacy Block, Guided Reading and the systematic development of key reading comprehension and grammar skills, while also covering the wider cross-curriculum priority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures.

Comprehension activities include:

  • Making predictions
  • Cause and effect
  • Making connections
  • Fact and opinion
  • Investigating charactertraits
  • Determining main idea
  • Making inferences
  • Key words and concept development
  • Sequencing
  • Cloze

Multiple choice activity sheets incorporating literal, inferential and evaluative questions are also included to assist with preparing students for multiple choice assessments such as NAPLAN.

Keys to decoding and reading competence; word study and vocabulary development activities are included in work packages. The curriculum level is set at year four/five but the books and resources have wide appeal and application.

In line with the Australian Curriculum Cross-curricula focus; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures, Aussie Bush Tales enable students to deepen their knowledge of Australia by engaging with the world’s oldest continuous living cultures.
