Schools' clean up contributions are essential

Schools Clean Up Day falls on Friday 5 March 2021 with Clean Up Australia Day arriving two days later on the 7th.

There a few weeks left to register and schools’ contributions are essential, young Australians and school communities accounted for more than 1 in 3 (38.8 per cent) of all Clean Up Australia Day volunteers in 2020.

There’s much to do due to the surge in single-use packaging as a direct outcome of the pandemic.

“With an increase in single-use plastics and disposable items during lockdown periods, there has never been a better time for schools nationwide to Step Up and look for impactful ways to support their local communities,” said Clean Up Australia Chairman, Pip Kiernan.

This year, Clean Up Australia is giving young Clean Up Champions the chance to win a recycled- plastic ‘Buddy Bench’ for their school. To enter, students will need to confirm their school has registered a Schools Clean Up event and share how they Step Up to Clean Up and improve their local environment, through a drawing, photo, video or story.

“We want younger Australians to Step Up and think about the positive changes they can make for the environment every day, whether that’s learning more about recycling correctly or making a conscious decision to reduce single-use plastics – each small action goes towards important environmental change.” Ms Kiernan said.
