Class clowns have their chance to strut their stuff on an international stage at the Melbourne Comedy Festival

The Melbourne International Comedy Festival is on the hunt for Australia’s funniest secondary school students, aged between 14 and 18 years, for its annual Class Clowns comedy competition.

Class Clowns encourages teenagers with a talent for comedy to unleash their comic voice. Participants register their stand-up, sketch, physical or musical comedy act and work on their performance with a professional comedian in a free workshop and rehearsal, before performing their act in front of a live audience.

Each year, hundreds of teens across the country participate in the competition, discovering and refining skills in writing and performing comedy. Patti Fawcett (Castlemaine, Vic) took out the national gong in 2019, and previous participants also include Joel Creasey, Rhys Nicholson, Aaron Chen, and William McKenna.

National finalists have the opportunity to perform in the National Grand Final at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2020. The final is an incredible showcase of the next generation of Australian comedy royalty, giving finalists the chance to win $1,500 for themselves and a $1,000 comedy workshop package for their school.

“How are these kids so damn good? I better enjoy the spotlight while it lasts because in a few years they will be taking my job!” said Joel Creasey.
