It boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in the state and special needs schools on Victoria’s far western coast are going to be looking pretty well too after some new upgrades.

Students at Warrnambool Special Development School are a step closer to getting a new school with a $19.6 million construction project that will replace the school’s old campus.

The new school will accommodate 170 students and will feature inclusive and environmentally sustainable design features, as well as a food training building and therapy areas.

The School, which caters for children aged between 5–18 years, is the only special education facility within the City of Warrnambool and has experienced a period of sustained growth since it opened.

The new school has been designed by Hede Architects and it will be built on Woollaston Road by Fairbrother. It is expected to be ready by the end of 2019.

Portland Bay School, which educates students with special needs will share a site with Portland Primary School and the oval is also being upgraded and will be shared by the two schools.

The project cost $7 million and is expected to be complete in the coming weeks.

The new Portland Bay School facilities include new craft learning spaces, general classrooms with Manual Activities classes to be housed in a standalone building.

Kneeler Design Architects designed the upgrade, with Nicholson Construction building it.

Portland Primary School’s refurbishment has been completed with classrooms, the school administration and library now freshly made over. The school received $1 million for the work.
