New online child safety resources deal with family violence

News Image

People working with children affected by family violence can now access a series of free, online safety resources developed by leading child protection experts at the Australian Catholic University.

Seven self-paced online modules and workshops have been designed to help those in youth-serving organisations better support vulnerable children and young people dealing with family and domestic violence.

Leading child protection expert Prof Daryl Higgins, from ACU’s Institute of Child Protection Studies, said the new Keeping Kids Central modules offer sought after knowledge and understanding of child-safe and child-centred practice.

“These modules are designed for people working in targeted, specialist and mainstream services who encounter families affected by domestic and family violence,” Higgins said.

“We recognised that some may know a lot about family and domestic violence but have had limited opportunities to implement child-centred approaches. While others may have experience working with children and young people but need greater confidence to address sensitive issues.”

The resources are part of ACU’s  Safeguarding Children and Young People Portal – a website linking external organisations and partners to accessible child-safe resources and tools

The online modules include practice tools and resources to help build skills needed to engage with children and young people.

Keeping Kids Central was developed with support from the Australian Department of Social Services and forms part of a suite of research, resources, tools and surveys available to keep children safe.
